Sister Slipper’s gonna get you …

16 May

I’ve always been a fan of ghost stories and decaying buildings.

Fever Hospital

This past Saturday I ended up, along with my youngest sister and my mama, at the long-abandoned Fever Hospital in Wellington.

Fever Hospital

The heritage building has been given to the SPCA by Wellington City Council to use as a new home for its animal hospital and education centre.

Fever Hospital

Ahead of starting extensive renovations the SPCA volunteers ran tours of the building -all for the price of a small donation going to the charity.

Fever Hospital corridor

Opened in 1919 to treat TB and influenza sufferers, it was also home to people returning from the war. Later it was used as a chest hospital. Wellington Polytechnic’s Music Dept briefly used a wing in the late 1990s before it stood, abandoned, for the 10+ years.

Fever Hospital

We even got a ghost story or two! When standing in the room where they held corpses before moving them down the ramp at dusk or under the cover of darkness (as if that wasn’t creepy enough) they told us of Sister Slipper – a nurse during the 1970s who was known for, surprisingly, slippers. She’s been spotted about the place.

Fever Hospital

Of course, I don’t really believe in ghosts.

… not really.

Sunday: family dinner at SMK
Sunday
Headed back to a grey Wellington and went out for dinner with my family – where we arrange the bottles on the table by height.

Monday: death's head butterfly stabs
Monday
A wee stylised Acherontia Styx friend for Grumpy Cat.

Tuesday: the feijoa that haunted my day
Tuesday
This feijoa sat on my desk all day – it wasn’t mine and I felt bad just eating it. I lasted 6 hours before I gave in and ate it.

Wednesday: lived like a Friday
Wednesday
The night before ANZAC day so of course we treated it like a Friday night.

Thursday: a no-good very-bad ANZAC day
Thursday
Which was then followed by a no-good very-bad ANZAC day. I hid from the world and then drank a glass of wine.

Friday: backup lights in the beehive
Friday
Walking down the beehive on a Friday evening – they were doing work on the Saturday and had installed emergency lighting so they could turn the main lights off. I mean, I presume.

Saturday: flowers at Laura's and a Jewish honey cake behind it
Saturday
Laura had Kim and Kate and I around to watch The Hour (yes, again) but just a few episodes this time. She made delicious Jewish honey cake.

I really really should get better at the self portrait part of this. It’s just, the light in our room is so terrible. It’s only ever too bright or too dark.

Rotorua? Rotorua!

21 Apr

This weekend I flew to Rotorua to visit one of my favourite people, Amy. Another favourite, Frith, drove down from Auckland to join us. We’d arranged all this, drunkenly, one Friday night.

Lake Okareka

We spent a … lot of time watching terrible/amazing television as the weather was not stellar. But on Saturday Amy took us around her favourite lakes. I, as always, was dressed appropriately.

Sensible bush shoes

I was also in a short skirt, Black Craft Cult t-shirt, leather jacket, massive scarf, and hoodbats beanie. Amy and Frith were in chucks, jeans, jumpers, and jackets.
I didn’t look out of place at all.

Lake Okareka

That was Lake Okareka. She then took us to Lake Tarawera where we almost crashed a wedding and Blue Lake where, on the playgroud, Frith tried to convince us she would be excellent on Wipeout.

Then we watching 10 hours of the show Made in Chelsea. My life has changed forever.
(she says, watching the second day of the Made in Chelsea marathon)

I am currently sitting silent, communicating with Craig through exaggerated expressions and notes written on my iPhone. I’ve managed to break my voice.

Saturday: St Patrick's Day tattoo from Craigy Lee at ALC Speakeasy Tattoo
Sunday
Craigy Lee at ALC Speakeasy did flash tattoos for St Patrick’s day. A wee spot of good luck on my ankle.

Monday: a dinosaur planter given a pretty plant and silver paint
Monday
I bought a wee dinosaur planter. He was in a bright bright blue colour that wasn’t quite my style. I rather like the silver makeover I gave him.

Tuesday: a special delivery of Marmite! I had missed it so.
Tuesday
Deliveries spread* around the complex and it was ever so exciting. We each got a wee pottle of Marmite hours before it was on sale to the general public.

Wednesday: headed to the supermarket for cold medication. Praying for a miracle.
Wednesday
Admitting that maybe, just maybe, I was coming down with a cold I trekked to the supermarket.

Thursday: sick day
Thursday
And then a sick-day. Bed, terrible crime shows, and Things and Ink magazine.

Friday: I should have gone straight home after work
Friday
I really should have gone straight home after work. I had one glass of wine and it hit me like a truck. I went to bed and slept for twelve hours.

Saturday: cider and custard square
Saturday
Kim and I went to watch Laura get her nose pierced. We then retired to Meow for a beer. I also had a custard square and it was an excellent decision.

* pun wholeheartedly intended.

Driving back into the city after family dinner. The sky stretching forever.

Monday: they've stopped turning the hall light on outside my office
Monday
The light in the hall outside my office seems to be either off or extraordinarily dimmer now. I’m already around a corner from anyone else. This just seems ridiculous.

Tuesday
Chalk graffiti along the waterfront.

Wednesday: all of a sudden there's a shopping cart in our carpark
Wednesday
All of a sudden there is an upside down supermarket trolley in our apartment building’s carpark. There are hooligans in the building.

Thursday:
Thursday
I went to my tattoo artist to get the heart tattoo on my thigh coloured in. This painting was on the stairwell where I paused halfway on my way down post-tattoo.

Friday: S'mores Pie!
Friday
S’more’s pie! Purchased from Dough Momma this graham cracker, chocolate ganache, and … marshmallow? pie was kind of incredible but SO so rich.

Saturday: had to go back to collect the pie
Saturday
and then I had to go back to work to collect the pie because of course I did.

Catching up with former colleagues pretty well always leads to me getting untowardly drunk on a week night.

Thursday
Blonde stranger, blonde building, green sign, green grass.

Sunday: coffee at rehearsal
Sunday
Black coffee and lines. A long Sunday rehearsal.

Monday: Really? is over the cover up of the creepy demon man graffiti.
Monday
Really? was written over the top of the painting over of a terrifying (amazing) human sized demon piece of graffiti. I like to think that the weeping dude with the sponge is equally related.

Tuesday: sunspots before rehearsal
Tuesday
Sunspots at dusk on my way to, yet again, rehearsal.

Wednesday: Waitangi Day. A chandelier at birthday drinks for lovely Megan
Wednesday
It was Waitangi Day and as such a holiday. We gathered at the Southern Cross for Megan’s birthday drinks. There are beautiful chandeliers at the Southern Cross.

Thursday: I always wish I had time to sit on this seat by the sea
Thursday
I do wish I had the time to sit on this seat by the shore in Eastbourne.
